Wendy Mukluk Wed, Sep 17, 2014 at 4:05 PM To: SLAC Internal List hi everybody, some things about our kickoff last night - um well it was sort of disorganized, (also i wish i had written down some history & dates so i could have chimed in in a more coherent way - sorry i was babbling - there needed to be a tad more explanatory background stuff. like the sit ins in 1999 & 2000 were for factory disclosure and for getting the uw to join the wrc, - etc. oh well, hindsight...), but i think the mingling part at the end was good & we should keep doing things like that. it's too bad we didn't have the powerpoint to start, i think a powerpoint or video at the beginning is a good anchor & intro. but i want you all to know that last night was not the first time we didn't have passwords, or keys for cabinets with audio visual stuff inside, and sometimes it's miscommunication or somebody forgetting, but sometimes it is central reservations fault, (or whatever offices handle audiovisual things in classrooms). one time they even gave us the wrong key for a cabinet that had a projector in it, so we were screwed. and then at 7pm you can't contact them because the office is closed. when you reserve a room and ask to have a projector or whatnot, do they give you the password or tell you to pick up a key somewhere, or do you have to dig around to find this info? (i was wondering if we need to complain about central res. procedures-?) also i was thinking we really need to check out the room the night before or day of, and put up signs directing people to the room if needed. like, vilas hall last night is certainly not the easiest place to navigate. i wonder if anybody didn't come because they couldn't find the room. so maybe in the future quick putting up some 8x10" paper signs would help-? maybe copies of whatever flyer or poster we had for the event. and even put a sign on the door that says "slac kickoff, come in, free pizza", or something like that - like the door to the room last night was kind of forbidding when closed and could have scared somebody off-? also i think, since we do so much sweatshop stuff, it helps to have a little intro picture or graph, even on a chalkboard, showing the levels - students, universities, corporations selling logo stuff, contractors, factories, workers, and tell how students have power over universities to pressure the big corporations to make the factory owners treat their workers fairly, and that students & workers get in contact & work together. something like that. some kickoffs we did that some some we didn't & i just think it's a good visual & bit of info. to always include. ...just some things that popped into my head... what do you all think? love, wendy
