Do It Yourselves! No one can help LTEs but LTEs. We feel that the administration will only change its policy if a significant number of LTEs join together into an organization and put pressure on them. The only way that people got civil rights and the right to vote was to organize. The Student Labor Action Coalition has been working for the past several years on trying to change the LTE system into something more fair, but needs LTEs to help in the fight. In 2001 SLAC met with the UW chancellor and with state legislators and won a small victory in the battle to win permanent jobs with benefits for LTEs on the UW campus. A provision in the state budget created a pilot program to make permanent jobs for at least fifty LTEs. Much more work remains. A system where permanent workers have permanent status, temporary status is only for work that's truly temporary, and everyone is treated and paid fairly can only come about if you ORGANIZE with other LTEs. - Talk to other LTEs around campus, find out about their situations and compare them to your own. You are not alone. - Be more visible. Let people know you are an LTE. - Come to meetings LTEs and students will be holding. - Take part in actions to change the University's unfair system of employment.
